I don’t care what anyone says. Tom Ravenel had some very cogent things to say about this state’s government and inept fiscal policies. Grady Patterson was incompetent - period. He may have been a gentleman, but I don’t give a whit about that when it comes to someone’s ability to manage a multi-billion dollar portfolio. The S.C. State Retirement System is in the toilet, thanks to Mr. Patterson’s absence at the helm of financial intelligence. Peel the layers back, and this sudden exposure of alleged criminal wrongdoing is all about political revenge. Had Tom Ravenel been more deferential to those idiotic good ole boys in power, I think that the system would have closed ranks to protect him by making all of this go away (and that’s if he were guilty). Instead, he antagonized them, and now he’s paying a very dear price for it.
It’s so funny to read comments from folks who just love the fact that Thomas Ravenel - the handsome, gregarious, fast-talking, swash-buckling Charlestonian - got his due. You’ve tried him, found him guilty, and have sentenced him in the court of public opinion, but you haven’t based anything that you’ve said on anything other than what boils down to simple jealousy. It’s easy to loathe something (or someone) that you don’t understand. It’s a case of the pimpled fat girl seething in emerald jealousy around the buxom, blonde cheerleader surrounded by her well-chosen friends. It’s really pathetic to read, actually.
There are larger forces at work behind this public ‘outing’ of Ravenel’s recreational life. Find those influences, and then figure out why. There’s the real news - not someone who (allegedly) bought a little coke to give to his friends. Who really gives a damn about that? Half the state legislature does the same thing - but that assumes a modicum of intelligence to know where to snort.

I am from an original Edisto Island family, but have lived in the Upstate for most of my life. I catch up on the news from my Seabrook cousins on Johns Island - it’s a lot more colorful than the news up here, I can tell you. All the people up here do is complain about all the people down there, for reasons that I can’t fathom understanding. I find Charlestonians, and Low-Country folks in general, to be warm and genuine.
The Ravenels are those kinds of people - civic-minded, love of family, and in particularly, a love for thei state. I reallly feel for them right now, as any true South Carolinian should for a family in distress.
It’s like I said in my first posting - most of these bloggers’ comments are way out of line - and based on nothing more than a need to crucify a wealthy Charlestonian because of who he is. Let’s allow the facts to speak. I know too much about the folks in Columbia to know that the timing of this indictment is anything but accidental. While I don’t subscribe to conspiracy theories, in general, I do know the political landscape in South Carolina. In truth, so many incredulous acts of blatant abuse of political power can’t be made up - most of our elected officials aren’t smart enough to fabricate stories like what we hear of that happens down there. Just go to a floor debate in the House; most of those guys don’t have two IQ points to rub together. Hell, most don’t have a true grasp of the real issues that need to be addressed, and if they did, they certainly don’t know how to work together to fix our myriad problems. All they are interested in is this one-upmanship and who can ‘out’ politic the other - both under the state dome and outside of it.
Again - if you want a real story, check out the real time-line of this indictment. This is not a case of SLED or the FEDS being overly cautious. Behind this story is a case of political revenge that extends past Thomas to his family. It’s a political vendetta in real time.

Ballard, good call. I have read the long blog going in the Cola. City Paper too. RJenkins has cut, pasted, and added more here. Clearly an eager T. Ravenel fan.
Firstly, Rjenkins is not an ORIGINAL Edisto family. Did you grow out of the sand? Please get over yourself and your family. Or was it your family that did away with the Edisto Indians? What does your lineage have to do with what Thomas did?
You say you do not “subscribe to conspiracy theories,in general,” you have twice stated that this is one in case. Why do you think people are judging his actions harshly b/c he is “handsome…Charlestonian?” Why do you so quickly suggest all against Thomas Ravenel and his actions are “jealous” of him?
Who “really gives a damn” about the coke thing? The question is, why wouldn’t you give a damn?

Tomorrow, Nov. 2 from noon-2:00 there’s a meet and greet hosted by College Republicans in the Stern Center ballroom. Governor Sanford and Lt. Governor Andre Bauer will be there, along with Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom and Thomas Ravenel, a candidate for State Treasurer. The fundraiser for Lt. Gov. Bauer is tomorrow evening from 6-8 at the Patriot’s Point Harbor Hilton.
Governor Sanford says: “He performed all the functions of the Treasurer”s Office fine during the time he’s been there,” he added. “I haven’t had day to day dealings with constitutional officers. I don’t go and hang out at their offices on a day to day basis.”
