Downtown hot-spot Johnson’s Pub (12 Cumberland Street, 843-958-0662) kicks off a new techno series called “The Stone Groove”” this Sat. Sept. 6. The first event of a monthly series of “multimedia turntablist performances of classic soul, hip-hop and rare grooves, melded with projected visuals of pop culture, animations and crowd participation,” features VJs Scrunchyface Flatbroke and Sonar. The gigs start at 10 p.m. They’ll kick it on the first Saturday of every month.
“September 6 is the kickoff event for the party,” says Alex Rosen, one of the performers (also of Magic Bronson). “To add elements of inter-activity, the crew has a method of recording video of crowd participation then hacking it up and incorporating it into the visuals. By combining the old with the new and engaging the crowd, the Stone Groove aims to become a Charleston institution for classic music and modern technology.”

I’ve seen these guys before, and they are very entertaining! There is not a single DJ around that puts on a show like this. Hope they didn’t get rid of the Lego people invasion!
These guys know how to entertain. They can cut up the most random assortments of both audio and video and serve them up for the audience in one coherent package of awesome. Don’t miss out on this!
Spaced Invaders rule.
that is all.
The City Paper tends to over use the word “turntablist” to describe any half witted joker calling themselves a DJ. These guys are artists and do a pretty damn good job bringing “turntablism” to Charleston. It’s about time the City Paper recognizes some of the few DJs repping real Hip-Hop. Keep it real fellas, I’ll definitely be at the show.
Tuck843 — I love using the word “turntablist!” Who else in town types that term but City Paper? But you’re sharp on that point about half-assed disc jockeys who barely put any creativity or effort into their “performances.” There certainly is a difference between a sometimes-DJ spinning one track after another during a casual dance night and a serious DJ determined to mix, segue, steer, and build a set.
Who else uses “turntablism?” Well Graffiti, a few issues back, used it to describe a few local “underground DJs” that in fact were on Apex Broadcastings payroll, worse yet on commercial radio, even worse on B92, and even worse than that, play Top40 pop tunes and ring-tone rap when they actually play live, even worse, don’t scratch or beat juggle or could even mix a record to save their life. However, Apex Broadcasting is a whole different issue in itself and would digress from the whole point of “turntablism” as a topic.
Third Stone Groove party is in full swing on November 1st, and this time we’ll be celebrating my B-day! Cake and pizza until our wallets run dry!
